The original Oculus Quest, launched in 2019, was a ground-breaking invention that set a precedence for what standalone VR headsets would become. The Oculus Quest 2, its successor, has been lauded by many critics and enthusiasts for its lighter weight model and elevated VR experience. In addition, it featured vast improvements and new features at a lower price and has become a mainstay within the VR and tech community. This article provides a lowdown of the differences between Oculus Quest and Quest 2 and what features you should look out for before making your decision.

    Graphic Resolution Quality

One of the starkest differences off the bat is that the Oculus Quest 2 delivers users a better visual performance due to its major improvements in graphic resolution quality. The Quest 1 has a screen resolution of 1440 x 1600 pixels, while its successor has a screen resolution of 1832 x 1920 pixels on each side, featuring an estimated 50% increase in pixels. In short, Quest 2 features sharper images and clearer resolutions.

Expanding on this point, the older model comprises an OLED screen, while the newer Quest 2 headset features the LCD screen. While the OLED screen contains pixels illuminated by themselves, the pixels on the LCD screen are illuminated by a separate LED backlight mounted around the screen. As a result, the LCD screen on the Quest 2 reduces glare and produces better viewing angles, which are vital in determining the quality of the experience.

    Chipset

The newer Oculus model features a more contemporary and improved processor – the Snapdragon XR2 system, enabling more sophisticated applications and games to be played on the LCD display. The Oculus Quest 1, on the other hand, used the older Qualcomm Snapdragon 835, which has half the GPU and CPU rate and performance compared to its successor. In addition, the Quest 2 has 50% more pixels than the original model, which powers one of the highest-quality displays seen in Oculus' existing line-up.

As the Quest 2 delivers more AI processing, the chipset enables more perception algorithms that work simultaneously with other applications that provide a more immersive experience. Furthermore, the chipset is optimized to be Engine for Visual Analytics (EVA) computer vision dedicated and feature cutting-edge computing technology that reduces power consumption and preserve the battery life of the Quest 2.

    Comfort and Weight

The Oculus Quest 1 had a stiffer headband, while the Quest 2 featured a looser band, making the headset more comfortable during extended periods of wear. Additionally, the newer model is less bulky and weighs 68 grams lighter than the Quest, 571 grams. Many critics and reviewers have lauded the lighter weight of the Quest 2 as it provides a more seamless and comfortable experience during wear. The Quest 2 also allows the users to customize accessories and peripherals that can be purchased separately to lend more counterweight andfacial comfort to enhance their wearing experience.
