The Oculus Quest 2 black screen of death is an error that many users have experienced when using the Oculus Quest or Oculus Quest 2. This error manifests as a black screen that can either be lit up with nothing on it or completely black. On some occasions, the Oculus logo may still appear before the black screen finally sets in. Several issues can lead to the Oculus black screen of death and below are some of them and how you can try to fix them.
A few issues can cause the Oculus black screen. If the batteries do not have sufficient charge or are dead, that can prevent the headset from turning on. Interrupted Oculus firmware updates can also cause a black screen. If you can no longer log into your Oculus account, your updates can get stuck. For a firmware that is corrupt or a hardware that is damaged, a black screen may also ensue.
Make sure that your Oculus headset has already been charged. If there is no charge, you will see nothing but a black screen. Plug in your device into a USB with a 20W Two-Port PD 3.0 USB-C Wall Charger that is compatible and charge it up for a little while.
If the headset is not charging, make use of a different cable like the 16 FT USB 3.0 Type C Data Transfer & Charging Cable or VR Power USB-C Cable, and make sure the charger is indeed compatible with your headset. The Oculus charger produces 2A so a charger with a lower amp can require a much longer charge time.
Open up the Oculus menu. With the black screen still on, press the menu button on the left side along with the Oculus button on the right side. If you are able to access the menu, open up an app to see if your black screen problem is resolved.
Check your Oculus app. Load it up on your phone and log in. Check if the app recognizes your headset and launch a game from the app. After the game has been launched, put on your headset and see if the black screen problem has been resolved.
Leave the headset on and plugged in. If you have already tried charging it but the black screen is still on even when you are using a compatible charger, leave the headset along for about half an hour or longer. If the headset is trying to update, leaving the headset alone will let the update continue without interruption. After the update is finished, the black screen may disappear and the app will continue its regular operation.
Check the proximity sensor. There is a small proximity sensor in between the lenses. Cover the sensor with your thumb to see if the black screen disappears. If it is not working, clean the sensor with a dry microfiber cloth.
Perform a hard reboot. Try pressing the power button and if a black screen appears press and hold it down for 10 seconds or longer. This will cause the Oculus to go into a hard reboot. This can help to fix many issues like the black screen.
