The Oculus Quest 2 was designed to be a standalone headset to allow users to explore its VR capabilities potential fully. In other words, the Quest 2 does not need to be connected to a PC to work, thanks to the new and improved mobile processing chipset. This processor allows the VR experience to feel more realistic to the user wearing the headset, allowing them to move freely around their space without being confined to the hassle of wires. Additionally, it comprises four cameras on its exterior that help map the area around the user while tracking and translating their movement into the 3D space, so you won't need any other additions such as the PC, cameras, trackers, and adaptors. However, you can also choose to use your PC and Oculus Quest 2 together.
Standalone, Self-Sufficient Design
Firstly, the Oculus Quest 2 comprisesrechargeable batteries that can be charged up through a USB Type-C port on the side and can withstand two to three hours of use after each charge. This means you use it charger-free and get to experience longer playtimes before needing to plug in again. For longer usage periods, you should consider purchasing and investing in additional battery packs for the Quest if you're looking to up the ante and extend your playtime.
High-Quality Graphic Resolution
However, the standalone design doesn't mean it would compromise graphic quality. It utilizes the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 chipset, which allows the VR headset to run on its own without any external accessories of the processing unit. The Quest 2 has a fast switching LCD that each comprises 1832 x 1920 resolution on each eye, which delivers almost up to 4K resolution combined. While they may be lower in graphical capabilities compared to PC VR games, it has one of the highest and most advanced resolutions in the lineup of standalone headsets. Additionally, it still allows for full immersion of the game because it has one of the highest quality trackers, which brings us to our next point.
Authentic User Experience
The Oculus Quest 2 is designed to be self-sufficient and wireless compared to the more traditional VR systems. The cameras track the user's virtual hand movements accurately through the LEDs embedded in the ring of the Touch Controllers – helping to make the experience feel more authentic as if you're moving your real arms and hands in the virtual world. In some other games, the Oculus Quest's cameras can track your hands accurately and won't need the controllers, enhancing the sensory experience of the virtual interaction.
Connect to a PC for Limitless Content
Think of the PC as an enhancement instead of being essential to the experience. While the Quest 2 has an existing VR system that is pretty impressive on its own, you can tether the headset to your PC and run it in wired mode via a separate USB cable. Furthermore, the brand also launched Oculus Air Link, which allows you to play PC VR games with your home's Wi-Fi. However, you will need to have a high-speed router to have a lag-free and smoother experience. The Quest 2 can support up to 1200Mbps wireless connections.
Naturally, you can get to download game clients like SteamVR to expand your collection of games and apps. You will get to experience higher graphic resolution and higher frames for a more immersive and interactive VR experience. Additionally, the games you can purchase on Quest 2 are compatible and playable on PC but with enhanced visuals.
